I'm on the fence, mostly because I've had a hard time finding any decent trident maples in my area. I came across this guy and curious if you guys think he's worth $300?

Nebari: 2 1/4"
Height: 9"

You guys are the only people I can ask for honest opinions. 🤣

Personally I would not pay $300 for that tree. Base isn’t that big, nebari needs lots of work, branching is very underdeveloped, container appears to be a production pot.

On the other hand, looks like a decent trident to start on as a longer term project. Price is just a little steep IMO.

My 2 cents…

Thanks for your thoughts, I tend to agree, but had to ask.

I wish there were more people with decent selection that lived close to me. My club is great, but there's a big gap in engagement.

That’s a little pricy considering tridents grow quickly. Also depends if you want a bonsai or a pre bonsai.

Greenthumbgardens has some huge trunk trident prebonsai. They ship too

Good shohin trees are harder to develop and to find so they don't become available every day.
This one appears to have good nebari so that's a big plus. Hard to see what the branching is but I suspect relatively undeveloped.
It's a good start to a shohin trident maple bonsai and I suspect the seller will get the $300 or close sooner or later
Any tree is worth what a buyer is prepared to pay.

Nah son.. try looking around the area for whole sale nursery , call them up , ask if they sell single trees and if you can look around. I’ve found whole sale nurseries for bonsai material in a big root bag , but but can be easily developed and already with big trunks for 45 dollars and would cost 300 at a regular landscaping nursery… They’re out there.

I wish it were, have lots at that early stage with promise but needing several years of work before having much value. This one has a fairly short straight trunk with little movement or taper! I would definitely pass at that price unless the pot was worth $250.

Where would you buy a better trident for 300? Just curious.

The tree seems pretty good to me, I'd happy to pay 300 for it.

I'm on the US Auction groups on FB and I see absolute garbage selling for 150-300 regularly. 300 could easily be the starting bid for a tree like this.

I agree

or $700 if Valavanis slaps his name on it

The USA desperately needs a good producer of prebonsai with a reliable inventory. Yes there are some good guys doing good work, but nobody is anywhere near meeting the demand for material

Perhaps you are right and that is why they sell for higher amounts, you said it yourself.
" absolute garbage selling for 150-300 regularly"
Makes a poor choice seem better perhaps.
As for where to find it for a certain price, that is up to you and the amount of effort you are prepared to make or the time you are prepared to spend growing and developing your own material.

Do you have a link? I tried searching Green Thumb Gardens and could only find a site that sells bare rooted trees, no tridents though.

If I could cut down a couple maples around 1.5 to 2 inches and let grow for a couples years still in the ground. Pull up and hold for a year and pass along for 300, I would. The reason junk sells for 300 is someone will but it.

Not sure what you guys saying "no" are expecting for that price? The prices for everything have increased dramatically and that includes bonsai stuff.
Just came back from MABS and saw some crazy prices on small trees o_O

I spent the same for a similar tree last year, and I think the one posted has a nicer base than mine, honestly
You aren't going to get a 6 inch trunk for a tree grown specifically for bonsai for $300.
Yea you can get a landscape tree with the same size trunk for less but it would require a lot more work and time to develop in to anything.

If anyone can find a tree of the same size in a bonsai pot that was grown as a prebonsai, not a landscape tree you need to chop down for a lot cheaper ($150-$200 or less), post it.
