I'm currently in a mad rush to finish wiring my Larch before they bud out. These two were collected on fall 2015. I'll post a few more to this thread as I go. I love old bark on Larch.
Today was almost 70 and the Larch buds are turning green!Good start! How is the weather in your area? I am still waiting for some consistent warmer weather.
The trees are wired in but only about 1 wire per tree. The trees I would be adding would be small so only minor digging around would be done. If I start digging and a lot of root work would be needed I may wait.Love the forest! I assume not wired in if you have intentions of adding more trees to the composition.? Won't you compromise the roots of what is there by adding to it later?
Working on this forest start. I didn't wire some of the more tender tertiary branches, I'll wait another season on that. Planning on adding a few smaller trees this spring near the back.
Thanks Lance, Im thinking I may just do 2 added small trees this year and then add a few next year.
Just curious, do people prefer forests with a little more character in the trunks or is straight trunk with taper better for forest? I like both.
I'd say all that matters is what you prefer for this planting! You've got an odd number of trees & it seems good to me spacially in 2d so keep it up!Thanks Lance, Im thinking I may just do 2 added small trees this year and then add a few next year.

Need much shallower box--it will help develop fine branching and better bases. The backside of the forest with 2 tiny trees added. I love the first few weeks of Larch waking up.View attachment 142235
Most of these die. Root sensitive. I think shade and benevolence is required. good luck! And a little Birch...
Ahhh things you wish you new. I think I might want to wait to replant into something shallower as these were all collected last spring. Maybe next spring into a shallow tray? Thanks for the good tip, it makes sense.Need much shallower box--it will help develop fine branching and better bases.
