Not to say "I told ya so," but I told ya so ;). This winter is a real beeotch. I said back in Feb. when it was 70-80 here in the middle Atlantic states not to take anything out of storage and try to keep things dormant for as long as possible.

We've had what five or six nor'easters with snow and heavy wind. This weekend and the week beyond will be among the most challenging of the season for everyone from New England to N.C.. We're forecast to have temps down in the mid-20's and very low 30's at night.

I have trees that are in leaf or recently repotted outside. I have been keeping all of that stuff under mulch for the last month. I plan on keeping it outside during the coming cold snap, but with heavy mulch on their roots. I also plan on spraying everything in leaf with mist before I got to bed on Saturday and Sunday, possibly into next Mon. Tues and Wed. That will help insulate new leaves from the freeze. I will get some freeze damage on leaves, but there's no way I can store everything in the basement this year. It's stuffed with all kinds of furniture and other things at this point.

Keep your fingers crossed that we get some kind of snow on Saturday. That will help a bit.. Good Luck!

Yeah, it's been a challenge this year. The cold is bad enough, but we've also got possible tornadoes moving through the area this afternoon. So I was out at 5:00 this morning moving everything back into the garage. I probably could have put them on the ground but they were going to need to come in anyway with this cold coming. Moving them back and forth is getting old...

It's supposed to be 70 here in D.C. by noon, low 30's by 9 pm. A 35-40 degree drop in 12 hours. High sustained winds at 30 mph gusts to 50. Didn't we just do this in early March? Sick and tired of it.

Sorry about this but mine are still frozen from November last year. Just got more snow, staying cold for a while longer too.
Sitting pretty!

Which is why keeping bonsai in a middle Atlantic winter is more challenging than Michigan. ;)We get see saw temps from Feb into May...We have already had a couple of 90 degree days in Feb., which started everything pushing new growth waaaay too early.

Yeah,I wouldn't want your weather. I worked on the east coast a few times. I didn't like it at all. Hot in the summer, non drivers when it snows and ice storms. Had to go to New York for one and Vermont for another for power restoration.
I just get cold and snow. It seems to last forever but you get used to it. And no tree worries in spring.

60 degrees this past sat and sun. 7 inches of snow monday morning...Winter is like a psycho-ex that won't move on...
oh well i'll keep shuffling trees in and out of the garage.

Climate change.
Next winter could be even funnier.
It's been warm enough this winter I could have kept zone 5 trees alive. One more like this and I'm getting me some Japanese Maples.
Loving me some global warming.
Yeah, just wait until it snows on July 4th!

Here in zone 4 Québec we have had the most mixed up winter I can remember! I have already discovered some nice damage from freeze/thaw patterns, coupled with ice storms and extreme cold.

Yesterday afternoon, it hit 70 degrees, then big storm, today it is 29. Most of the big farmers around here, usually have their corn in the ground by now. Probably be at least another week, before they can even think about it. The indians are restless, and it's not pretty.

We've already hit our high for the day... currently 54 F and falling... freeze watch tonight... after Easter... in GA... wtf!
How the tomatoes doing?

Down here it is pretty much the same. I mentioned this to a local nursery owner the other day and he said the real danger point is 29 degrees insead of 32. I got distracted and idn’t follow up so can’t say why he feels tha is the case. Could be heat of condensation released as interstitial waters freeze first, but I don’t want ot find out the hard way. Anyway the trees are right next to the side door in the garage so that’s where they’ll stay for a couple nights as the temps drop into the freezing zone. I have too many new buds on collected trees just popping and don’t want to see any damage there. Doing the 2-step in WNC.

So far, all of our outside plants but two have buds but not breaking so yes, at least here snow on Friday and Saturday will keep most late but timely.

These two concern me and I will most likely have to mist them to freeze at night by then, not certain but both are to large to move, etc...
