The snow fizzled to a dusting here, even though they had predicted two to four inches. Storm moved faster than anticipated.
However, one fizzled snow storm certainly doesn't mean spring is here in the middle Atlantic states. Thinking spring is here in Feb./early to mid-March can get your trees killed. We've got temps in the low 20's to teens coming this week in my area. It's colder out west of here in the Shenandoah Valley and West Va. (BTW, Snowshoe ski resort in W.Va. got a foot of snow from the storm that just passed).
This is the most difficult time of year for keeping bonsai. Late hard freezes can happen into early April.
Early warmth followed by deep freezes has become a pattern around here for the last six or seven years. It's become tougher to gauge overwintering. Lost a really good bald cypress to a late hard freeze even though it was not in leaf and still under mulch. The buds had begun to emerge (meaning the tree was moving out of dormancy and its trunk was apparently vulnerable). The trunk died back to the ground. I should have been on guard and brought it inside, but thought the protection was adequate.
The trick is to keep things from leafing out for as long as possible, hopefully into mid-March.
