Looking good Aeast. I can only offer a pat on the back as I just started a River Birch this summer. Put it in a pond basket in the bark it came with at the 75% off sale. Mine is setting in the edge of the pond as I couldn't keep it watered enough. Best of luck w/it.

I need some advice on this tree, the area in red is dead tissue and I think should be carved out. Any suggestions?

Carve down into firm wood if it is rotten. If not get it dried out by keeping under roof. Marine epoxy (Total Boat) with two coats. Birch rots very easily and it needs to be kept firm if you expect it to heal over. Epoxy is is much more effective and longer lasting than other wood hardening products.

Dead wood contacting wet ground needs protection. Sealer? Areas on trunk let heal over naturally;). Pot goes well with tree.

Yes, it gets sealed every year with a wood hardner epoxy.
