Weird spot on trunk...

Hi,

I have a japanese maple, Little Princess, and it has a brown spot on it that formed quite rapidly, over the course of a week or so. I didn't work on it for over a year and I see nothing weird on the leaves. Doe anyone know what this might be? Thanks in advance!

That's a dead spot. Probably physical trauma at some point in the recent past. Hopefully not fungal.

Definitely necrosis. I'd suspect that little divot near the margin @ about 2 o'clock may have something to do with it. Doesn't look like sunscald to me. Its POSSIBLE its fungal, but I'd guess physical. If it spreads at ALL, I'd treat it for fungus. Maybe go all @cmeg1 and hit it with calcium & amino acids as a natural fungus fighter.
