Vine maple

Absolutely;)! Welcome. Most beautiful leaves of dwarf maples and native to boot. Nice box. Is drainage good? Have you been to Portland Bonsai club meeting yet? Great mentors to be found there! If possible visit Michael Hagedorn. He loves Vine maple and can give most excellent advice in person.

I love the leaves and have always appreciated the beauty of vine maples. The drainage is great. I put plenty of 5/8" holes in the bottom. Haven't been to a meeting yet but it is on my radar to look into. Thanks for the advice.

welcome @RH-W !

+1 on what @Potawatomi13 said. Local clubs are a great source of knowledge, and will give you access to conferences, workshops, and meeting others. This is all crucial for somebody who is eager to learn and develop their skills. Mirai apparently has a 2-year waiting-list for their in-person courses; i'd put my name down ASAP just in case :) (...even though Ryan barely works with maples....)

It's great that your first tree was a collected maple! Most people i know have terrible first trees that look like springs in pots.

I am very jealous of your location! There are nurseries in your area that have been growing Japanese Maples for 100 years! You have easy access to more cultivars than i will see in my lifetime.

Its been a couple years since I collected this tree. Obviously it has had a repot. The roots have developed nicely. Had a few inches of die back on the trunk from the initial cut. It has been lightly carved to help shed water. Seems to have stabilized, but we shall see. Pleased with the length of the internodes.

I like the deadwood at the base.
I wished I got a fine maple when I was living in PDX back in the day.
Looks like a fun project you have.
