And you are correct about that, but I had been given a lot of reasons/solutions for this problem, all having to do with a disease/fungus so I got locked into that and ignored what might have been obvious if I would have spent some time digging down 6" or so. Once I did that, it was obvious. I'll take the beating for being lazy any day to save the tree!
