Took a trip up to the National Arboretum this morning just to look at the scenery. Also took a few photos of some bonsai that don't get noticed as much as others. The chrysanthemum bonsai is from a workshop at the museum last week. natarbmum.jpg

Stanley Chin Trident maples. The first is the "Phoenix" trident meant to resemble...a phoenix

Fukien tea (carmona) These are always seen as small mallsai. This one is big and old.

wow, that second trident maple is fantastic! I don't often find neagari to be elegant and graceful (more often rugged and gnarly) but that example really stands out.

The chrysanthemum is really interesting too. It serves as an excellent example of stylistic and taste differences between penjing and bonsai.

Fall scene of a piece of the surrounding National Arboretum. If you're not familiar, the columns in the distance are the original set that used to be part of the U.S. Capitol Building. They wound up at the arb because they were replaced. Their proportions weren't artistically adequate to support the Capitol's huge iron dome. They were quarried near Aquia Creek in Va. near me.
