Tree Memorial Thread (Trees you miss)

I, too, experienced an unusually high rate of tree loss this winter and spring. Many air trees I have had for almost a decade and never any trouble. Years of development and affection for each branch gone…ginkgo, old chojubai from Bobby, white pine from TelperionView attachment 504463View attachment 504464View attachment 504466, and hackberry from Julian Tsai. RIPView attachment 504462
I love that chojubai.. how did that go?

Several of the many I've lost, or gotten rid of. All circa 1998-ish or a bit earlier. Left one is an imported Korean hornbeam from Chase Rosade. Died after I repotted it to death. Top Right is a Alberta dwarf spruce group. This one didn't die. I finally threw it out as it became a huge pain in the ass. Last one on the right--240-ish year old English boxwood collected from a nearby plantation ruin. Paperwork for the particular boxwood allee planted there still on file in the Fairfax County courthouse. This was one of the originals--counted the rings--which is how I know the age. Trunk was exceptional and large--that's a 25 gallon galvanized tub hanging behind it. Got some roots with it. Grew well a week after collection, then again the following year. Teh third year, it didn't grow and dried up and died. Post mortem showed no new root development. The thing grew using stored energy alone...Still miss that one. Had some documentable history.

My very expensive Ponderosa Pine is dead. It never grew new growth and candles never extended. I think it must have had an issue before I bought it this past spring.
Sorry to hear that. Don't let it get you down. You're not alone in your Ponderosa struggles here in the Eastern U.S.

Probably a combination of things resulting in some horticultural disaster affecting the roots--most of them had green cambium but never leafed out. Mystery disease killed the chojubai. None of them had any pathogens per University of Minnesota Plant Clinic.

What was the causes for these ?
Korean Hornbeam, imported yamadori: didn’t recover from a defoliation, recommended by a visiting pro, wasn’t necessary, never again.
Japanese Red Pine from Brussel’s: removed too much foliage at once, transpiration slowed and roots rotted in wet soil.
Imoorted Japanese Beech: sold to a guy who killed it.
Imported Japanese White Pine: aggressive styling by a visiting pro/imperfect aftercare.

Larix Decidua. Poor little guy didn't get a chance to achieve his potential. Didn't get through last year's mega heatwave 😢 I'll get another one some day.

🎶 Maybe I didn't water youuu, quite as often as I shouldaaa... Maybe I didn't shade youuuu, quite as soon as I couldaaa.. but you were always on my miiiind... 🎶

I wish I had photos!

* An Eastern Hemlock that I dug up on the property of a 240 year old stone house where I lived for several years. One of my first trees and I kept it alive for 30+ years until a huge limb from a white oak tree in my back yard fell and crushed it.
* A 22 year old JBP that I grew from seed. I just didn't understand how to care for it; it was in terrible soil and needed a repot for years.
* A 31 year old Murraya paniculata cascade that I made for my husband for our first Christmas in 1988. It was knocked off the shelf by firemen when we had a fire in our greenhouse in January 2019. This was the best tree I've ever had and recently repotted into the most expensive pot I ever bought.
* A 23 year old JM that I repotted early this past spring, then repotted a month later on the advise of a visiting pro. I think I chose a bad sol mix on the 2nd repot and it never recovered.
RIP all!

Some really tough losses.

OP should of made a rule that you have to post an image of said tree. If it meant something to you and you cant be bothered to post an image, what's the point. Its a bit boring just 'reading' about losses🎻

I leave behind a trail of dead Taxus trees, here's a couple that had potential

There was a wild Apple tree in my allotment that I'd chopped down to a stump and had been chopping and creating deadwood on while it was in the ground, was shaping up nicely, it's healthy and alive in this image.
Unknowingly another member had applied some weed killer to it and it was dead one spring when I went out

Oh damn

Sure maybe I'm nitpicking! The old saying goes, pics or it didn't happen!

4 Hornbeam trunks hammered together, I often wonder how it's doing, I sold it after these images. I imagine it's looking like one tree now with everything meshing together..and callus forming in the slits/gaps

I sold this Acer katsura a couple years ago, I do wonder how it's developing...Nice potential as a twin trunk. From a garden centre off the A3 in South London

@BobbyLane
I'm sorry you feel like you can be cantankerous in the face of my losses.
That I've not been diligent with photographic records for my trees, have had computers die and lost photos that way, or have lost images on smart phones that were stolen in no way diminishes my losses.

Trees I miss: This is a Kotohimi from garden centre stock, @ConorDash now has the tree, i'll need to get an updated picture.
I miss most of my trees I sold, they were decent trees with good potential. I shall post some more...

Deshojo RIP 2023. Dried out when I was away for two days, pushed back some new leaves after defoliation and then suddenly game over. No idea what was the actual cause. IMG_20210401_173333.jpg

Colected last year, had leaves but never rlly developed any roots.
On these ones I did not use the black bag.

Cornus mas
Hawrhorn
Field mapel
