Tis the night before REBS

Thanks Al, I took a bunch of pics too, but yours are better so I don't have to post them.
By the way it was nice meeting you there and putting a person with the forum persona.

Thanks Paul nice meeting you too. I have only posted 20 trees and I took about 108 trees, and thats about half! I left plenty of room for those that wish to show some of their favorites. Post away.

You know that was a cool tree. I have seen it many times at Boons exhibit, but it seems to get better with age. One thing I have noticed is that the upper branches are really starting to get thick. It is easy to see in the upper canopy where large branches have been removed to make way for smaller branches to work with. The canopy shape right now looks some what weird but the patina on the branches trunk and roots is to die for. With the right cuts and new wire the canopy could be restructured to get a better outline on that tree, but it is cool to see a tree that old here in the US.

My favorite was this elm tree. It is a large tree, about 4 feet tall and the trunk was about 6 inches around. the base is all rotted out and the trunk has some hollows in the back. My picture does not do it justice. It was adjacent to the Mas pine so getting pictures of either of these trees was fairly hard.

san jose bunjin

That is one of my trees in the show. It was a bush with 3 trunks when I got it about 20 years ago. It came off the general raffle table at one of our monthly meetings. It is in a Sara Rayner pot. The tree to the right of it is also mine. It is a procumbens nana in a Jim Gremel pot. A good percentage of the tables in the show, including the one my San Jose is on, were built by Tom Colby.

Is that a metal tag hanging in the last image?

I've known that tree since Mas was our club sensei in the 80's and would bring it to our annual show. It wowed me then but it is so much more refined now. Amazing.

Hey Smoke,

I was looking for you at the show but I didn't have the chance to meet you. I was very busy at this year's show and with my son.

Any way just wanted to let you know that last maple you have a picture of is Kathy's. She had it up for sell last year and it was said it's still for sale. I think the price scares a few people away.

It was a great show and there was a lot of people from all over the country and everyone was in great spirits... The large group from L.A. was alot of fun and the guy from L.A. that won the Saturday demo is sure starting off bonsai with a great start... It's hard to watch such a nice tree go to someone that has never had a tree or worked on one before. I wish him luck and hopes he joins a club.

Thanks,

JW

Hey JW know what you mean about the newcomer winning. We watched someone that had never come to a meeting walk out with a Dan Robinson masterpiece, never to be seen again.

I thought it might have been Mr Maples (Frank B.)

"It's hard to watch such a nice tree go to someone that has never had a tree or worked on one before."

The same thing happened at our show. Ryan Neil did an awesome styling of a collected Western Juniper and it was won by a total novice whom we haven't seen again. Several people even offered to buy the tree for substantial sums but were turned down. Even though the purpose of demo raffles is to raise money for our clubs it hurts to see a beautiful tree go to almost certain death.

Paul

Anyone have pics of the demo CA Juniper Kathy was working on for Sat? I brought some friends who wanted to leave so I did not get to see the whole demo on Sat-just the first half:(

Next year, I will be a vendor selling ficus, brazilian raintrees (1) hornbeams, hackberry(1) and maples ( tridents and Japanese maples). All are top stock material, You can not get a better deal than what I have to offer

Also I have tridents that are specimens, ( price range 1k to 2k). You can not go wrong with my prices. Most of my trident trees would go for 3 to 5k
