I missed out on the Christmas tree challenge. (Them things don't do well round here in summer.) So, I wanted to challenge myself with an "Instant Bonsai". Most of the prebonsai I have are managed for future potential. In fact, being a newb, I own no bonsai pots and all of my works are in nursery pots. So, off to a local nursery I know has some bonsai pots and maybe something I would enjoy working with.

I found a pot for $10 and then browsed the nursery. I found some un-named junipers, some of which had been trimmed at strategic locations. I think these were what they would use for the sale of preconstructed bonsai sold for an extra $10. (Think mallsai and roadside stand bonasi for $29.95.) I found one that called to me. The movement was what I was attracted to. So, $16 and off we go!

I used a tad heavier wire to pull the branches in an "S" shape. This pulls the branches closer to the trunk and will begin a look of ramification without having any.

I like to look at bonsai from the top down as well as front and side. I look to open up the branches to allow more light to reach lower branches. Looking from the top down allows to stagger the branches as well, which surprising enough looks natural from the front view. It is natural for trees to spread out.

This little branch was odd. It had several smaller twigs that stuck straight up. By wiring and twisting the branch, I was able to turn the twigs linear with the larger branches. This will be a strong branch in the future.

Why? Is it no longer with us?

Oh, I haven't killed it yet. :p What I meant is I want to remember the stages. For some reason on this tree I was able to get an image of what I want out of it. Most my other stuff is winging it with no clear direction. So these images are just a rememberance of a beginning.

Any critique is welcome.

Critique, well its obvious you have no taste ! Not using a Coca-Cola can for size reference, I hope you found that can and are not seriously drinking that stuff.

;)

Ed, you don't even know the half of it.... I sheepishly turned away the "SEC" logo. :(

If I were you, I'd rather remember it this way -- and Dr. P is MUCH better than the red monster -- Go ACC!
