The Tree Thread

Some Sunday Carvery today on a Hawthorn stump. It has a good twisty base and I've just added a little carving to add to some I did a year ago. The boring bits of growing trunk sections are done now. On to the fun bit of turning it into a bonsai.

Big Cryptomeria in development. A little carving, foliage reduction and establishing a last apical section. More jins and deadwood to come in future. For now though, keep it hairy, keep it strong, just like Junipers. Bonsai aren't made in a day.IMG_20200202_160015.jpg

Some light root work on a big Maple with Makita Die Grinder and a kick ass bit. My reciprocating saw would not cut through the fused root mass under the trunk.

Do you bother sealing big root cuts like that before potting it up?

Root pad of hawthorn I repotted today - only needed a little pruning saw for this one :)

Silver Birch from a seedling finally transitioned into a pot by Erin. Chopped the last of the thicker roots off from collection today. I'm not going to wire until I'm happy it's growing strongly hence the misplaced branching from Winter cutback. The tree is around 2ft tall.

Tree in an Erin pot. The extra bit of depth should keep it happier - it loves moisture.

Shohin sized birch, Betula pubescens, repotted today. There’s a good nebari which I’ve covered a little to encourage more surface roots. The pot is a bit visually heavy for it right now, but will balance better when it’s in leaf. When it’s growing strongly I’ll go in and do some more structural pruning. Some or all of the right hand side branching may vanish. 2FEA32A2-FB77-4D7B-AF92-CF53818CEEED.jpeg
