The Shohin Tree Thread

Defoliated about a month ago. I should probably leave this in a grow pot but, you know what, whatever. I've heard willowleaf can thicken in any conditions, and I'm curious to see if it's true.

This was actually my first bonsai when I got more serious about the hobby. It was ugly so I chopped it down. I think it has potential, though I may need to put it in a deeper pot eventually to make it so.

Does anyone know if Martin Sweeney is still around?

Here's a fun little Arakawa cutting that I purchased from Martin here, for my first mentor Phil Atkerson, back in October of 2013. Phil passed away in 2021 but gave the tree back to me before he was unable to care for it.

Coastal redwood I got last year. Survived the hot Sacramento summer woohoo!

Grew like crazy all year but probably not going to get another pinching session. Next year is getting better pad definition, some deadwood work and looking for a nicer pot.

I collected this sierra juniper a few weeks ago and I think it will make a gorgeous shohin twin trunk or maybe just use the right trunk only but I’m really happy with it

So that one I did myself

This one I wired at a club event, where Suthin was giving a class - he shaped it. Again, I really think I should have this in a grow pot to get it to be more than a shaggy outline eventually, but I’m curious to see how they thicken in small pots.

Also included: Suthin’s willow leaf display at the last Nationals. A single species, tropical display is such a cool challenge of Japanese and American tradition by a Thai bonsai artist who may have cut his teeth on ficus.

Kinda talking out of my ass, but it’s what I’d like to believe. The show photos are from bonsaitonight.com - I’ve got quite a ways to go with mine!
