I want get to the bottom of this...

An Informal Upright Trident...
A Formal Upright JM...

Is it really that offensive to see???

Can they not still be beautiful works of living art???

I'm all for Naturalistic Style, using the species's mature look as a blueprint for your bonsai...and I am striving for that in many of my trees.

Has the culture of bonsai changed in front of our eyes???

It seems more and more, like people are quick to dismiss the notion of a "pine style" for a deciduous tree...

What's the big freaking deal!?!?!

Maybe making a tree grow in a way in which it normally would not is part of the art...for some.

Where are the Maple Styled conifers???
Is that a thing people do???

In a world where you can legally make a Bruce Jenner, Caitlyn Jenner, I have to grudgingly accept that someone would abuse a deciduous tree so maliciously, as to shape it like the lowly conifer... how's that for a "dig"? :P

I've not been around much these past few years, and am probably a perrenial fan of controversy in the field, and no fan of Boon and such, but I've missed out on this one. Can someone spell out out the broad outlines of the controversy, and - yes - post some pix to illustrate? Thanks.

Ill be honest, I lurk the forum to read articles and such, but I come here for info, not pats on the back. I would probably get my feelings hurt if someone told me my tree was stupid, ugly, or poorly designed. I mainly style bonsai for relaxation and the ability to bring nature a little closer to my home. If you like trident in the pine style, do it! Bonsai for me is about enjoyment anyways. What you like and what I like are probably a little different and neither way is wrong! Cheers

I'm fairly sure this is related to a comment Smoke made in my thread about my new Trident stock but there is no controversy about it, it's a fairly straight up and down pre-bonsai which needs a future of some description and I'm all ears.
I think @just.wing.it means more about the comment in general, I'm interested too as I can't speak one way or the other really.
