The 2024 Yamadori/Collecting Thread

Only half the trees in my area are even budding yet, but honeysuckle definitely take off first. My honeysuckle yamadori is exploding with growth. I've plucked off at least 200 buds and small branches that keep popping up.

So the tree is expending its stored energy to install new solar panels and you keep destroying them. The tree may soon die if it doesn’t benefit from all that growth.

Did get 3 behind in my back property. Not 100% sure what they are except think one is a hornbeam from leaf I saw in fall. Not sure if they will make it as wasn’t many roots when collected especially being near larger trees making it hard to dig up roots. Some buds on 2 of 3 but not on rough bark one which I dont know species.

I will be going to the swamp today to look for a small BC (2" trunk may be) to do trunk twist. I am trying to find one that has not budded yet, which is now becoming difficult given the time of the year and my location. Wish me luck.
PS: The baby BCs are not sentient yet. They don't know I am coming.

Get some to braid
Some how braiding seems too artificial for me. I am cool with it in the garden but I try to keep my bonsai a bit more natural. They can look like they have gone through disasters and rebirth, but a contrived structure is not what I am after.

Have you ever tried a raft with one? I’m experimenting with a little one very similar to the picture.

I have a plan in place for one with this design. I haven't found the right tree yet. If I don't find one, I plan to make one with trunk splits. The concern that I have with trunk split is the death of the underneath split if it doesn't have foliar support. I can do wedges but they require a long time to smooth out and make the trunk look natural.

Because they were mostly suckers around the base. I mean, would you want all these buds to grow? Look close, you can see all of the ones I'd already knocked offView attachment 537825
Once I collected a crepe myrtle stump, I plucked away the suckers and only allow the upper buds to grow. The tree did not get enough energy from just those top foliage and slowly died.

I went to the swamp, chopped down willows and drag them to the shore until my saw ran out of batteries. Then I collected a few small BCs. As soon as I get something done, I will post the trees on the BC study thread.

Finally had full blue skies, hopped on my side by side and took a ride out to an American Hornbeam I wanted to collect, got about half way through digging it up and it started pouring rain. I've had 4 days without rain on my days off work in 2 months. To make it more fun, the skies are blue and the sun is back out.

Me waiting up to three years for my collected persimmon to either leaf out or wither away seeing Cajunrider's tortured BCs bud out.

I am beginning to see what I think are adventitious buds on the trunk change color. They're too small to get a good picture, but I'm thrilled.
