I started a few grafts, including one with a new technique I pioneered - "air grafting"

I'm grafting several different varieties for maximum benefit:
1) Kishu Shimpaku for evergreen foliage and Japanese cachet
2)Portulacaria for drought resistance
3)Dwarf Pomegranate for flowers & fruit
4)Ficus, so I can grow it indoors

I couldn't find any cat litter I liked the smell of , so I took your advice and sifted the big pieces out of some turface, leaving a nice fine media:

I know it will take a few years, but I'm in this for the long haul. After all, isn't bonsai about willing your grandchildren high maintenance crap they don't want?

@Bonsai Nut - thanks for the suggestion. I think you had the right idea, but were wrong about the flow; clearly the energy of the tree moves toward the left, making that the ideal place for the ni-ren.

I expect the grafts to take pretty quickly, so I want to start preparing to show the tree soon. This is the accent I had in mind.
