Species with the Smallest Leaf? (Maple)

The autumn color from this type is very vivid, looks like the tree is on fire.
Really beautifull in autumn
When green i prefer the look of normal maple

They do have a very nice fall color. I'm not sure if it's just the pictures but I'm not too partial for how the leaves 'clump' or look clumped up.

@Bill Valavanis,

When I order my Koto hime, and it ships, upon arrival is it okay to cut back a few nodes to start building ramification now? I would want a thicker base I think, but I suppose I wouldn't know until I got it. My plans after arrival are to repot in spring on a tile/slab in a large container and, depending on trunk caliper, start on building ramification.
Thanks, Joe.

Edit: What is the trunk diameter I can expect roughly on the Koto hime in your catalogue?

I ordered one last fall after shipping had ceased for the year, so am waiting for the tree when it is viable to be shipped, per the website. Since these trees grow sooooo slowly, the size of the seedling will be perhaps pencil sized. Just a guess.

I sort of assumed they were moderate growers? I just read on the Bonsai Study Forum where Bill had replied to another member that they are fast growers, rapidly growing in spring and possibly cutting into the wire in weeks. I was thinking they grew slower than perhaps trident or mountain maples but still fast growers compared to other Japanese maples.

We did not accept any seedling orders past May of last year. Please order again though my website.

You can trim the maple a bit arrival but it is too early to even think about twig ramification. First develop the trunk, then the branches.

I would NOT put anything under the trunk, not necessary. Remember these are cuttings, not seedlings and they do not develop any kind of tap root.

I suggest planting your new Koto Hime in a one or two gallon container. Don't go too big, that's not good and the soil will not dry out rapidly.

Good luck!

Bill

I also just ordered a koto hime from Bill's site along with a few others. Since we are in a mini ice age, I dont expect to see them much before March.

If you want to thicken the trunk, I would plant into a 1-2 gallon pot as Bill suggests. I would try to use one that is wider as opposed to tall so the roots will spread horizontally. You can make training/growout pots out of all sorts of things: A 5 gallon bucket cut down, plastic storage containers from Walmart/Target that look like short milk crates with plastic mesh from an art store zip tied on the sides to hold the soil, dish pans, etc. Just remember to drill good sized holes in the bottom for drainage. As it grows, you can always put it into an even bigger container. I plan to follow Bill's advice and if I want it bigger, put it into an anderson flat eventually.

Just ordered mine today as well. I couldn't find anything about shipping, I assume as soon as weather permits after this storm, or how long after it ships it will arrive.

I had saved some 1.66 gallon containers from houseplants I plan to put it in.

I'm finding a bit of frustration ordering from him. I ordered on Sunday Feb 1, on Monday I got an email saying my credit card info was missing a number....Okay, happens I guess. I emailed back the info they asked for on Monday, maybe 2 hours after I was asked for it. 2 days later, I've heard nothing...Just a confirmation would have been enough. This is not how you should do business.

Bill's en route to the Kokufu-ten exhibition in Japan. Subscribe to his blog and I suspect you'll have some amazing photos delivered to your inbox by the weekend, while you wait for your tree to arrive in the mailbox!

Finally received my koto hime!

I have to say, I am really satisfied with the trunk caliper on this one. Much bigger than I anticipated.

Repotted into a 1.66 gallon nursery container for now. I was surprised that it was growing in regular potting soil, so I just used what houseplant soil I had on hand and filled the pot with it.

I know it is a cutting, but the roots already have a nice grey bark while the rest is green which makes it look like a huge graft. Hopefully the trunk will get some better bark In a few years.

Those buds are right on top of each other! I have a feeling ramification building will be a breeze. Very excited for working with this species.

It's now the 20th of February, 16 days since I first placed my order...I have still heard nothing

Yeah I was gonna call today too if it hadn't came in. A tracking number or an email would have been nice. Be patient though, the tree is worth it.

Since people do not indicate when they want their orders shipped, we hold them until the appropriate time for their climate. I believe your order went out on Tuesday. Since I don't know your name, can't tell for sure.
