some japanese maples seedlings i have going, from nice trees

I’ve got 530 (yes I counted them 🤣) JM seeds in the fridge, from 4 different trees in a local botanical garden. I’ll be sowing them in September here, with hopes to grow 100 of them for sale after a year. Local market prices are around R100 (South African rands, ~$7.30) per seedling, with the market being VERY hungry for any Japanese maple material.

I’ll keep the best of the bunch for myself.

Wow I don't know why i didn't think of this. Genius!!! Well...time to hit the gardens and arboretum.

progress...we had some outlying hot weather, then wet and rainy 2/3 days for a few weeks.
goal now will be to introduce the shelf to some more sun to get these moving. maybe lightly fertilize soon.

the two 'green' maples in these pics are different types of maples, the smaller leaf green ones i have are the ultimate goal,
those are from a nicer tree. i got true leaves showing on a good amount of them too

i split the group of purple and paperbarks to their own pots

I've tried growing paperbark maples from seeds from neighbors' trees w/ no success...but then read that they have v low germination rate so don't feel so bad. You're finding paper bark maple seedlings under mature trees?

Yeah I got saplings with multiple roots at first and cool too, two doing decent. I cant recall many as bonsai

Few updates. Neat colors. Keep in mind these jp maples are not the common green Acer. The leaves on parent tree are about half the size and less lobed...which isn't even too noticeable at the stage of mine

Lovely collection you have here. The seedlings being so young, their mature leaf pattern may be different than what you see now.

Amazing variety of color. I hope you plant them in groups and keep track of each group so you can observe any cross-bred traits. I too like to collect from local botanical gardens but do so covertly which involves snapping the samaras off and stuffing them into my pocket indiscriminately.

Happy w these, I ternodes tight and 1/8" + thick w bark forming on some.

Im tucking these into a custom box with bark insulation for garage this winter

Takes a lot of work to care for these but enjoyable. Hoping to get half of them thru winter...a big deal for their longterm survival
