Should I trunk chop this larch?

All this may be academic anyway. [U]one_bonsai[/U] is in Melbourne, Australia. Melbourne is one of the better places to try larch in Australia (depends which suburb) but still quite marginal. They don't seem to last for more than a few years down here. I think summers may be too warm and not enough winter chill for good larch. Japanese larch seems to be a little more hardy than European and other species of Larix.

It's a Japanese Larch. Apparently they do well here because the winters are cold enough. It's Sydney where people have trouble.
 
How old is this tree? I plan on growing my owns seeds this fall!
 
I got it from a nursery so I don't know its age
