Shortleaf Pine (Pinus Echinata)

It's a huge risk but executed skillfully, I don't see why it wouldn't work. If it were mine I'd try to promote growth on those lower branches if you already have the trunk size you want. And you know the rest. 🪚🪚🪚
Idk about the lower branches then it just becomes a Native pine trying to look Japanese .. it would be safe .. but not for this one

You're right, if you actually have decent styling skills. I'm not good at styling yet so to make something look "Japanese" would be a level-up. No matter your decision I'm following the progress of this one.

Barring the addition of significant movement in the long expanse of straight trunk, I'd strongly consider building the tree from the lower two buds (ok, maybe 3 as there seems to be a small one poking out in the back lower down). You could build a pretty strong tree with a KILLER jin.

You may've addressed your thoughts in this regard earlier when referencing making a japanese style tree out of native material though, but I think it could still look sufficiently wild.

Very cool relative to the pitch pine! If you never snap anything styling trees, then you aren't making anything interesting 😂

I think you have a nice old trunk to work with and it could be a really cool slant style with some time. Peter Tea, Ryan Niel and others have made some great trees with a similar trunk to yours. Now that it’s back on track, I would make a decision where to terminate the first trunk section and get some good placement/movement for the new leader.

Yes I have thought of those future possibilities already

Do you know anyone selling shortleaf p seeds who could ship to eu? It would be nice to have a few in my collection.
Edit: I looks like a good compromise between loblolly and pitch pine. With the multiflush ability of loblolly and the bark and backbudding of pitch p.

I doubt it

Very cool to watch the development on this one. I’ve collected some big honking shortleafs and they’re recovering in nursery cans with pumice while I cross my fingers 🤞🤞

Sheffield's has them in stock with worldwide shipping. They are the most reputable seller online.

I really like the progression story on this tree. I’m also interested in learning more about this species (pinus enchanta) and how it compares to other double flush species. What would you say distinguishes it?
