San Francisco is freaking awesome! Succulent and Cacti Questions

Hey All,

First trip to San Francisco and the plant life here is more amazing than I imagined. Was curious, has anyone taken little cuttings from succulents during their travels abroad? I'll be in the Bay Area and Yosemite for the next 2 weeks so I wanted to know if I could take a leaf and let it sit in a little water for 2 weeks then pack it up in a wet paper towel during the flight home.

Thoughts? I know I can't be the only one whose thought about this.

These are from one windowsill. My girlfriend collects hundreds of these thing. Around here succulents are indestructible and propagate like crazy. Don't know how they'd do in Maryland, but I doubt the trip would kill them.

Any preferred methods?

I currently have a bunch of other succulents at home, they are doing well, but not like some of these crazy things I'm seeing in almost everyone's front yard. Freaking love this place already!

You should call Boon to see if he has a rare day off, and can show you his garden.

Or drive up and visit Jim Gremel.

It's been a while but I used to propagate succulents and we actually let the cut part dry before planting. The enemy is too much water. Whether a leaf grows depends on the species though...some require the branch/trunk.

Good luck.

How about a damp paper towel? Oh and ensure you have permission -- fines can ruin a great time.

You don't need to keep them in water. If anything you want the leaves or cuttings dry. I would put them in a ziplock bag until you get home. Once you're home stick them in some coarse soil. When the cuttings (or dropped leaves) callous over they will start sending out roots looking for moisture. If they're wet they just rot.
