Rocky Mountain Juniper

Wonderful work Jason. You guys sure like the big ones.

Walter,
Thanks for posting the pictures.

Hi Walt,
Yeah, I do happen to have a few rather large trees! I enjoy the large trees the most, however as I am getting a bit older, I will be 35 this week, so I should say as I am getting a bit wiser I am starting to acquire a lot of really good shohin and medium sized trees. I think my back appreciates this! haha

I gots a question.....do you have a pic of the root system on this beast when it was captured ?? It got healthy so fast , you must have been a hell of a job out in the field. If you don't have any pics could you ruminate a while on the collecting experience and procedures for this tree ?

Dwight,

This tree was basically slip potted from nature to the box it is in now. That is why it is was so healthy so fast and able to work on it 1 year after collecting. Very little root disturbance during collection. I have no pictures, but I will tell you that there will be some phenominal roots when potted. There are some twisty roots with deadwood, and it will have a huge root spread, 30" or so when exposed and put in the pot.
When collecting this is what you want to find, totally captive root systems. Hope this kind of answers your questions :)

Coming along nicely in just a short time. What size of pot do you see for this one, besides a big one.

So was it in a rock pocket or something ? One of those rare miracles that you walk by , grab a branch and pull and the darn thing comes right out ?

Depending on what I find when I uncover the roots I think it will go into a pot with inside dimensions of 28 to 30 inches and about 8 inches deep. The root pad will allow smaller in all directions but that would look funny I think. I will start buying pots around that size now so that once I get to repotting I have a few to choose from. I already have 1 pot that will dwarf the size I mentioned above! If it wasn't for the drainage holes it would be a ceramic swimming pool!

Yeah, or something, lol!!! Even with the small root ball that it has it still weighs in at over 250 lbs! SO no the darn thing didn't come right out but it wasn't as tough as it could have been.

By the size of this one I dont think it came right out, maybe with a crane :)

Randy actually packed this out on his back with other trees tied to it. He is an animal I tell ya! THis was one of his heavier packs he told me.

Thanks, Jason

Jason, Look like some world class material I love this tree!

'Some questions I'm curious about.

1. Can you give a little story about collecting this tree? I don't want you to give away any secret area's or anything, but what type of area/climate was the tree growing in when you found it? On top of a mountain? Was it in Oregon, where you found it?

2. Did you find the tree? Did you have help collecting it?

3. What type of pot are you thinking about putting it in?

Hi Art.

Thanks for the interest in my trees! This big RMJ has been left to just grow this year....and boy has it grown!! It really has turned into a bush and is in need of a major haircut. I did this on purpose so I can make sure it has plenty of strength so I can put it into a pot this coming spring. At that time I will also really thin it out and make it look even better than the 1st styling. I can't wait!
I have done some work but have yet to take pictures. This is the last tree that I pictured. http://jasonsbonsai.blogspot.com/

Yenling, Thanks! Everyone loves this tree, it is large, good live veins, excellent deadwood and will only get better. Randy Knight collected this tree about 3 or 4 years ago out of the Rockies. He collected it himself and packed it out over a mile through the mts on his back. It wasn't in a forest setting but rather more like desert. If I had to guess the weight as it sits I would put it over 200lbs easily and I would guess the box to weigh somewhere around 30 lbs. It is a beast and is a 2 man tree. Once in a pot it will be much tougher to move.
As for the pot, well Walter Pall did some virts a while back to give me some ideas. You can see them here http://jasonsbonsai.blogspot.com/2008/07/virtual-potting-of-killer-rmj.html and here is the progression of the initial styling. http://jasonsbonsai.blogspot.com/2008/07/walter-palls-visit.html

Thanks, Jason

I'm wondering if Jason or anyone has seen any updates on this insane RMJ?

He posted somewhere that he was selling everything but I havn't seen anything else. If Ryan got it he's a lucky SOB !

You can make that guess due to Jason being related to Randy and Randy being in business with Ryan and travelling with Walter ... either that or Walter has it in PA....

The tree is now in Ryan's garden. It is in a new pot. There it is one of the larger trees, but certainly not the largest. There are many which are larger and much larger. Also quality wise there are a couple hundred of that kind.
Times have changed. Five years ago I thought that this was almost unbeatable.
