I have bullhorn acacia, That's pretty rare but would like to see other examples of Rare or Unusual bonsai

Monkey thorn or whistling thorn is cool but i have yet to see one in bonsai or even growing in cultivation I'm sure others will chime in. This is a hot topic among Bonsai people

Show me anything rare or unusual please Thanks Good day.

As others mentioned in the threads I linked, I'd like to see more Virginia persimmon. It has great bark, and the fruits are pretty, but it is difficult to collect, and the hobby still seems to be working out the kinks when it comes to their horticultural needs. I'm planning to do some experimenting this summer.

I'd also like to see more Virginia pine. Again, it's been done, but the go-to North American pine seems to be the pitch pine.

I replaced a bush in the front of my house with one, then went on to buy three more for bonsai- one in a 10 gallon pot that’s about 10 feet tall and two smaller ones. The largest is starting to develop nice bark at the base. I’m not planning to work it for a few more years, just keeping it in the container and letting it mature a bit. I’m eager to hear of your results this year.

Where did you buy them? Would you recommend that nursery?

I bought three at Gardners Landscaping up in Lionville off 113- the two small ones and the one that is now in the ground as a landscaping tree. I would recommend them, they were receptive and have non-grafted, true American Persimmon. The only issue is that they’ve started as container trees for landscaping, so no real root work.

The fourth and one I am trying to use as bonsai material came from Somerset Nursery up in Ludwig’s Corner off Rt. 100, however they apprear to have gone out of business this winter. I stopped in on a random fall day last year as they had an end of year discount and grabbed the persimmon and a huge Skeeter’s Broom Japanese Maple. Had I known they were going out of business, I would have bought more. They had solid stock for a landscaping nursery.

Manzanita! I'd really love to see some manzanita bonsai. I have tried to collect several times without success. I've had them live on for a couple of years, but always a slow decline. Anybody?
