My sister has an escambron bonsai that is new to her this year. She wants me to style it for her, which I'm happy to do, but I don't know escambron well enough to know when is an appropriate time to do it. She keeps it in a greenhouse all winter, and tells me that I can do it anytime, but I'm hesitant to do it during the offseason, without knowing more.

Suggestions on timing and any other tips for this specie is appreciated.. ( ESP. Since if I do a good job , she's giving me a redbud tree that I've wanted for some time)

Thanks Dario, I had seen the info sheet but not the thread... but most of these guys are in far more tropical climates than here in Ohio, and I worry about the timing... but I guess it is in a greenhouse.

... and I worry about the timing... but I guess it is in a greenhouse.
If the green house have artificial lighting and heating...it should be fine. Otherwise, wait until mid-spring. This is just based on my little experience growing tropicals here, and we have a much milder winter than yours.

Yes it's a tropical greenhouse, that's the type of trees she likes. Thanks for the thoughts.

In the greenhouse would probably be ok but if would be safer and probably recover faster if worked on in late spring when it really starts to take off.

I can say I do major work to my tropicals as I bring them in for the winter. My lighting isn't the same as the sun obviously BUT I can control the temperature and humidity to make perfect growing conditions and the trees LOVE it and react well.

I can also say all my trees react well to any work done EXCEPT my Fukien Tea. I absolutely can not do any root work when it's inside. So because I have never worked with escambon my opinion should be void. Just because its a tropical doesn't mean it will react the same as any other tropical.

You know this though. My opinion, don't do anything till some who has worked with them responds and SCORE that redbud!

Good Luck Judy!!

SCORE that redbud!

Agreed.

Thanks everyone for the ideas, I'll try to convince her to let me do it in the spring. But she's not really a patient person, and it doesn't sound like it'll cause too much harm, there isn't going to be any root work, or repot. So we will see.

If no root work or repotting you'll be ok most anytime if it's protected in a greenhouse.

Polar opposites she and I....
or maybe that's bi-polar opposites!
