Quercus Rubra (Northern Red Oak) #1

This has given me some inspiration!
Found 5 Red Oak seedlings around the yard this evening that I'm going to put in pots this weekend.

End of year. Grew nicely. Loving the color of the leaves this year. The moss looks excellent as well. Needs a repot next year. I have a pot in mind, but I dont believe the roots are flat enough, so I may just repot in this container again. Gained about 2/10s of an inch in width this year. Would like to see some back buds on the lower branches.

95% sure is Quercus lyrata Overcup Oak or hybrid thereof🥳.

Repotted today. Was able to get the root base flat enough for the pot I wanted it in. I imagine the red leaves in fall will look great with the yellow pot. Will let grow unrestrained this year unless something really needs attention. Realized after the potting that the pot is not directly on front... guess that will change when I repot in 2024 again.

Potter info to follow. My wife bought the pot for me and I have to check who its from.

Very nice! Pot is awesome!

Thanks. That shot make the tree look smaller than it actually is. Maybe should have stepped back slightly. Its really a nice size for the tree to live in.

Yep. Same here. I will see how this one holds up and if no issues after a winter or two, I might pick up a couple more.

Today. Looking nice. Trimmed a few longer extensions back, added some slow release fertilizer. Pictures of moss that has been following the tree around the past couple years.

A few other views. The back side is bare and needs some depth. Turned the tree towards the size to hopefully stir some latent bud development. Moss is growing well.

Leaves are off. Moss is vibrant. Nice tree. Needs some wire next year and pruning. Two types of moss present. Tree added about 1/8" to girth. Should do more next year without repot.

Thinking of cutting off the top left "branch". Theres a decent line to the top right with a new apical branch.

Otherwise, need to pull back in the two lower branches. Birds have been at the older moss all spring but newer moss is growing anyway.

Thoughts?

I can see why you would want to remove that branch. For now, I would let it be. At this point I think It’s providing food for the tree. Next year maybe.
