Pull it out of the pot and look.

If you are afraid of the rootball falling apart you should not repot. If you are confident that the rootball will hold in tact it will cause no harm to remove the rootball from the pot and look at the tree's roots.

was hoping for a easier way really

Don't need to pull THIS one out of the pot. The soil surface is basically screaming "repot me." Soil is broken down into mush, surface roots are visible (not talking about the nebari, but the feeders).
BTW, you may have issues getting this out of the pot because of the inward curve of the container.

Take several pictures using a marker that shows the top of the soil compared to the top lip of the pot. Let it grow - when it starts raising the level of the soil the roots are pushing it upward. At that point they will probably be escaping out of the bottom of the pot as well - something to look for now.

What is it?

RockM nailed it.

Take your time ALL winter researching substrates, And by spring, you'll have a lot of GOOD work to do!

And if these are growing that well in this mess, your growth next year will be outstanding !

I'm just going of what the tag and that said Sageretia

Now he's just being a wanker Mav!

Does this thread have anything to do with POSYING? lol! What IS posying!?

Mav. Where are you getting this material at?

Only asking because @BobbyLane has been getting some great material from Graham at Kaizen....have you found him yet? Distance from you?

Posying is what my phone thought poting is spelt like probably haha .

I normally get them from a garden centre but iv got this one cheap from a supermarket.
Yeah iv found he's Web site

While what Rockm said is true- the soil "looks ugly" and it could probably use some sort of top dressing to cover those exposed feeders- as long as your tree is happy in that soil mix, and the soil is draining well, it doesn't "NEED" to be re-potted. If you are concerned about this mix being too "mucky" and the tree is not growing well in it or the soil does not drain well when you water (water stays pooled on topic the soil for long periods of time when you water), then you should absolutely re-pot in the spring.

If wanker is the British term for a dick,a big throbbing member, that's me.
But fun loving, nonetheless. I tend to jump on funny things because they can be fleeting things and a missed opportunity at cracking a joke is a terrible thing. Don't you think?

yep it dose stand for that and yeah I agree

well im new so i wound not have a clue if it was
The easiest way by far is to lift it out of the pot as others have said. But another indicator is if the water takes a very long time to drain through the pot when you water it.

If that's the case, a short term fix is to push a chop stick into the soil in a few places and gently loosen up the soil a bit.

That should get you through to spring.

Even if they not bot bound I think I'll repot them anyway because the soil in them look awful plus I want them in bigger pot so they can grow bigger if that will work ???
