Pot for Japanese Black Pine shonin

Happy Sunday Nuts. I really enjoyed the thoughts and feedback re: pots for Shimpaku a week or so ago, I thought I’d ask for some on this shonin size JBP. I want to find something that showcases the base better and isn’t so deep. I’d like to see the semi-cascade continue to elongate, but am having a hard time trying to figure out the best shape for the container.

Regarding size, would you always want the semi-cascade portion of the tree to stick out beyond the OD of the container, or could you use, say, an oval or rectangle that maybe sticks out a little more - assuming you planted the tree a little higher.

I also would love some feedback on what color unglazed container would work well with this tree. I think a nice grey would be rad, but please let me know your thoughts.

On a side note, this tree was minted as an NFT through the Nifty Trees platform. I own the NFT and will be documenting the trees progression through Nifty Trees as well. That’s another subject for another thread

The definition of semi cascade is hanging below the rim of the pot.

I would pot this with great consideration of where it will be placed as a shohin in a shohin display.

Since more upright trees tend to be used at the top of a box stand, it won't be used there. It may be used on the next shelf down, but depending on what is used at the top and on the other side of the second shelf, you may have too many conifers up there .....

So I think it's most probable location would be as a 6th tree, on an independent (read tall) stand displayed forward on the side the box stand is pointing towards.



I think the most correct pot will always be found when taking into consideration the entire display.

I think this tree would look really nice in a slightly taller drum pot unglazed dark brown in color.

I hadn't thought about a drum but I do like those. I love the idea of dark brown or dark grey. The tree's bark is darker/greyer (blackish) than it is red, so I thnk something other than red on the container would be sharp. Also want to plant the tree in a way that doesn't hide so much of the Nebari. Its got a pretty nice base behind that rim, just gotta find a way to showcase it!

Appreciate the thoughts as always @sorce. This would make this the very first time I've ever thought about the tree on a display. It probably would be best on the single tall pedistal if for no other reason than I don't have many more trees worthy of a display stand.... yet.

In terms of this tree meeting the "requirements" of semi-cascade, its hard to tell... Maybe hangs over the rim a cm. What style would you consider the tree if not semi-cascade? Seems likes its been trained to be that.

Aye. I Reckon without that cm you'd have a definition leaning upright with the look of a semi cascade. So it falls into an odd zone.

But a cm is a cm!

Being only a cm though, the pot should help it look more, so I'd want to see it in something as shallow as would be considered still a semi cascade pot. Where the other extreme will make it look less ok.

I think less lip may help, but I don't mind the lip it has and it's hard to picture it with less.

As much as I despise "crescent" pots because people want to use those pots more than put the right tree in them, this seems a tree that would be complimented by that shape.

Agree a drum would be nice. I think a square semi cascade could work too.
