I was thinking about picking up a needle juniper and would love to see pics of some owned by other members. Doesn't matter what stage it is in, doesn't matter what style it is. No critquing, no arguing, no nonsense.

Also any info you want to share about the species is welcome.

Lets see what ya got. Thanks.

I've got a needle juniper (albeit a small one). I'll take a photo and post it tomorrow. I trimmed it last weekend so it is a little sparse, but I really like the tree and the growth habit.

J. squamata and San Jose (technically not exclusively a needle juniper, but pretty much the entire canopy is needled right now)

San Jose.
First year in training.
The lower right branch has been made into Jin since this picture.

Picked these up in September at a fall sale.
Cant wait to start working on them next year.

Not sure Junipers can be chopped sucessfully without foliage below if that's what you were thinking to do with that(?).

Thanks. wasn't planning on chopping. the plan is to style as is for a skinny formal upright.

Ok, well.....no offense, but.....in all honesty.....

Its very straight and tall. Might be good for learning and just seeing if you can keep it alive.
Unless you can put some movement in that trunk and get some branches lower down,
I believe that, in the future, you'll see that you can do much better with better material.

Again, no offense

Thanks. No offense taken. I knew what I was getting with this one going in. Goin for something like this. I believe this is jkl's tree. Hope he doesn't mind me using his photo.

Every time I see this I am astonished all over again. Awesome BP.

Perfect formal uprights can be a rare thing in the bonsai world. A trunk that is perfectly straight, has perfect taper with no visible chops can be highly prized in the bonsai world. Although at a first glance they may not look like anything special. Think about this.. How many times have you seen perfect taper and a perfectly straight trunk on a tree with no visible scaring?....Either bonsai or in nature...

Although this particular tree might not be a perfect formal upright. It does have potential. Here are a few beauties. I realize that this tree might not be able to pull off this amount of beauty. However, maybe you can get some ideas.

I think most of the junipers submitted are great trees but not needle juniper. I think there are two species that are sometime called needle juniper, rigida and Juniperus chinensis 'Foemina' (Needle Juniper). It was the Foemina that John Naka used to create his masterpiece "Goshin". (Scroll to bottom of link to see this famous bonsai)
