Policy on new members selling things

I would hate to see one good person lose their, house, car, sanity, over the bad actions of someone else.
When that true desperation post from someone sincere comes, we'll make an exception.

Better to not be in the "making exceptions" place to begin with.

So, the seller must be here for x amount of days....

But the inactive buyer who gets took because they aren't here enough to pay attention needs protecting?

That doesn't make much sense.

Nothing wrong with learning the hard way.

Lose a house or car? How? Am I missing something? I mean if one is relying solely on bonsai as a way of living then they shouldn't do bonsai because the demographics for this hobby is pretty small..unless of course if you are a well known master or have a reputable nursery (somehow with guaranteed customers). But if not, then bonsai is pretty much an expensive hobby that shouldn't be relied on exclusively. I'm looking at this thread as selling bonsai here and there and not as a full blown business..maybe that's were my confusion lies.

If you lose your job, you might want to quickly sell your bonsai, so you don't lose your house.

Oh I see. Got it. That's delaying the inevitable...it would be best to find another job asap.

You say that like it's easy to do. In the months it could take to find another job, you could miss multiple mortgage and car payments.

I am not saying it is easy but if the situation is dire then we can't really be picky. Just get whatever job is available to get by then move to a better job once that is available. I'm just being realistic. Selling bonsai will help for the short term but shouldn't be relied on exclusively. In all honesty, it is probably easier to sell furniture than to sell bonsai. You just have to choose your pill to save your house. That's what I would do if I am in that position.

I wanted to open this topic to see what members think about the subject. Recently we have had new members who register on the site only (or primarily) in order to list something for sale. In some cases, the transactions have gone off without a hitch. In others, there have been issues.

There is not currently a policy on the site about how much time someone should spend here before they are allowed to sell directly to members. What do people think?
From the past experience, I would suggest the Forum administrator to check for the background of the seller, or ask for some deposit/warranty to ensure the seller is selling with honesty. We have been in the bonsai community in the last 20 years, but in the recent 5 years we met several crooks already..
