This tree is doing very well with vigorous growth and new buds in old wood. It shed one of of its main branches last winter, but I feel like that is for the best design wise. Now I can start working on the big issue before I start wiring it next year.
I am hoping someone can give me some guidance on how to approach removing the whorl of dead branches and keep it natural looking. Should I remove them all? Most? If anyone has seen some videos that they would like to share I would appreciate it. I haven’t seen any yet where this problem is presented.

What whorl of dead branches are you referring to? The deadwood is a major story telling component of this tree. I don’t see anything I would want to remove at this point.
