Photinia Fraseri - Red Robin

A local nursery is closing down and i picked up both of these red robins for $5 each marked down from $60 each.

They were both about the same hight as me..until i hacked them.



I know very little about these apart from being used as hedges.

I havent really seen many of these as bonsai.

I like them. Don't know how well the leaves would reduce though. They sure are very tough trees. I have a load of them in my yard. Reduced them from trees to a hedge 2 yrs ago. I took a 2 inch piece that was lying around for about a month, to use as a stake in the vege garden. It started budding in no time....
They back bud profusely and grow very fast. I would think it can make a worth while bonsai. Would be very interesting to see how these ones go. Please keep this updated

That is crazy... yeah im not sure about leaf reduction either. I put them in these large storage tubs.

Did you do any work on the root balls? What mix you got in there?

I am digging one out of my back yard this spring. It's not the best looking material in the world, but I like it and I think it can make something cool.

Yeah i cut 3/4 of the root ball. I just have plain potting mix for now. I didnt have anything else.

I like the contrasting leaf colours. I think these will look really good as finished product.

hi do you have any updates on the outcome? Interested because I bought some bare root stock photinas for next to nothing...been in a big pot for about three years now...decent double trunk about 4 inches diameter. was thinking of making bonsai of them.
