I seen a thread mentioning permits...to collect. Can one get a permit for any state park? Is there a way to find this out.

State Nature Preserves

Two state nature preserves have been established in Hocking State Forest. These preserves - Sheick Hollow and Little Rocky Hollow - have unique and fragile ecological systems. The preserves are managed by the ODNR Division of Natural Areas and Preserves.

Sheick and Little Rocky Hollows are designated as interpretive and scientific preserves respectively, and are not open to the general public. Admission is by permit only. Permits are issued by the Division of Natural Areas and Preserves who cooperatively administer the preserves.

Think this allows one to get a permit?

Disturbance or defacement of any property, material, natural feature or vegetation is prohibited. Berries, nuts and mushrooms may be gathered and removed, except from seed orchards or nature preserves.

I have a contact that I'll send you later this week when I get home, I've applied for permits in Ohio. State parks are mostly out, but there are some other places. It depends on the tree species in state parks, they only allow non-native,invasive plants to be collected. And permitting process is very slow.

Thanks Judy! Much appreciated...a good hike with a chance at collection a HUGE thrill.

Most state or federal parks and preserves are strictly off limits, except carefully supervised removal of exotic invasive species.

State and federal forests usually issue permits for most areas.

In all cases, inquire at the headquarters offices of these organizations located in your state.

Best current and correct info

for collection on ANY public land is to contact the governing office in the area you wish to collect. For the BLM a "Wildings" permit is what one inquires about. They are generally issued but may have local restrictions on area, species, burned area ect.

Are permits to collect required on BLM land?
Ernie

Yes!

When you do or don't require a permit is very simple:

Permits or permission from the appropriate person is required for collecting on ANY land that you (or your family) don't personally own.

Darlene your best bet is probably to ask a local farmer/land owner if you can collect a few small trees. Offering to pay can be helpful.

Unless the type of trees you're after are only in the parks?

Dan...I have far more farmers near me than state parks. I just thought...I should ask my cousin. He works for a tree company. Grows trees that they sell to people wanting large developed trees. Surely they might have some not so perfect material ones wouldn't want. I did put a jingle in his ear during the family reunion...about trees that have character.
