People will always find a way to disappoint you.

Sorry I couldn’t work out how to post the link as a banner. I didn't really know how to express myself properly either. This makes me so much more sadder and angrier than any celebrity or random person dying or whatever. Hundreds of years of bringing joy to thousands of people and some piece of **** just chops it down. People are weird.

This was my thought also. Did a 16-year-old kid walk out to this tree in the middle of the night with a powerful enough chainsaw and a 6 foot bar and chop this thing down by himself? The cut alone looks incredibly clean. Feels a little mysterious to me quite frankly.
That tree is is three feet in diameter at least. He made a very clean cut, means he had a very large chain saw, or a two man cross cut manual saw, and he'd probably have to wedge it to keep the blade of whatever from binding. In either case, he'd need some help. He's got friends...

How a 16 year old can do that. This tree is not near any parking lot... I thought it take 20 minutes walk to get to it right?

Anyway, will it back bud? The stump is still quite a bit above the rootage.
It will likely become a "grove" of trees from multiple back budding on the lower part of the trunk that remains. Whoever did this didn't kill it outright. Sycamore are extremely vigorous trees.

Took some serious thought, albeit nefarious thought, but thought none the less, behind the act. I don’t think this was just a “chop down a landmark old tree TikTok challenge”.

I'd agree. Took a bit of planning, mostly drunken, idiotic planning, but planning none the less.

It couldn't have been just one teen, right?

I did some light digging...

Platanus occidentalis is the true sycamore, Same genus as American true sycamore. The species name makes it clear who the copy cat is Acer pseudoplatanus looking at you

It is a maple. And, in the UK, a sycamore. Just like a tube with batteries and a lightbulb is a flashlight. And, in the UK, a torch.

Yeah, but I'm not claiming an eastern red cedar is a cedar. It's a juniper pretending to be a cedar. I only know of three species of cedar off the top of my head: atlas, deodar, and Lebanon.

We are all on the same page. I just saw Americans calling it a sycamore and wanted to clear it up. The English are weird enough already they can call it a sycamore if they want

Nao is correct. In America this species is called the "sycamore maple" The American Sycamore is Planatus occidentalis. As said, they're not the same tree. (to add to the confusion, London Plane Tree is a hybrid Planatus occidentalis).

Anyway, Sycamore maple is still a pretty vigorous grower and this one is likely to throw basal shoots and remain alive. It's old, so it has some momentum to carry it forward for a while.
