Hello guys, found this Pentaphylla Pine with a very interesting trunk in a local nursery for 150€, was planning to buy it but I'm afraid of all those yellow needles, what do you think?

What worries me more is that those buds seem old. It looks almost as if this tree hasn't produced new foliage this year.
I had that happen with one mugo pine, it has those brownish golden buds with bumps on them, but it's only now pushing some foliage. In my case this was the result of serious abuse. It's the same for a banksiana I have.

I think the tree in your picture has a chance of not surviving the winter, there's something not right. Apart from the youngest needles showing a discoloration.

If it's still healthy next spring, it's worth 150 euros in my opinion. But right now, it feels sketchy.

Maybe someone with experience on this type of pine can show some insights. Pentaphylla is on my list but I don't own any, so I base my opinion on 'general pine behavior'.

When was this photo taken? When was it posted to the internet? The buds look good but that doesn't mean anything without the requested information. Timing is everything.

I’m in Portugal and this is the peak of summer at the moment. I took this photo myself during this week.

Ok so its seems this tree is in some kind of trouble as I suspected, thanks

Buds look of concern to me too, but I can't say I see them well enough, or know Satanpine well enough to tell.

Still, couple with yeller and meh soil...

Skip.

I'd still like to see the buds better if you end up back there....if...lol!
