Partially “Bamboo”zled!

In the eighties some of us in the bay area P1020303.JPG were bamboo crazy. Plant hunters roaming the earth seeking out exotic varieties. We would have auctions of these first examples at San Francisco Botanical Garden (formerly known as Strybing Arboretum) that went for outrageous amounts. We had just formed ABS, American Bamboo Society. These were heady days. I've worked with them since then. Killing a runner or clumper was never a problem. Of all the exotic examples available now I still love Otatea Acuminata ssp Aztecorum, Mexican weeping.

you can't EVER get them out. They will try and they will succeed! The key is to dig out the suckers entirely, completely, and some inches of dirt around
This is like extracting an impacted wisdom tooth. There's a much easier way.

Is that a building expo?
MABA = Mid America Bonsai Association
This is a group of about 20 or so individual bonsai societies from the Appalachian mountains to as far west as Denver, Toronto south to Atlanta.

It came into being some 40+ years ago, before the internet. We'd organize regional bonsai conventions, bigger shows than local club shows, smaller than the Rochester National Show.

This year, 2020, the Milwaukee Bonsai Society celebrates it's 50th anniversary. In honor of that, we were going to host a MABA convention in June. We had a dozen vendors, 5 or so top rank artists and even Jenker, coming in from Europe. All cancelled due to Covid19. All the speakers graciously rescheduled for June 2021. Hopefully vaccine will be available by then and Covid19 will be on its way to being a bad memory.

Milwaukee is close enough to Door County that you MUST absolutely put MABA on your calendar for June 2021.

@Shima
I kept an Otatea a. aztectorum going as a potted plant for 7 years before it crapped out on me. It was indoors for winter, outdoors for summer. It was "bonsai'ed" because I had to keep it small enough to fit under lights in winter. I loved it, but it wanted to be too tall for the light garden. Oh well.

Thanks Leo! That sounds absolutely enchanting. I most DEFINITELY will be in attendance!

I though you guys were speaking of the Madison Area Builder’s Association.. whoops!

For "potted bamboo" and bonsai bamboo, many of the cultivars of Bambusa multiplex are ideal. I liked 'Fernleaf Striped Stem' and 'Riveriorum' as natural extreme dwarfs. 'Alphonse Karr' is hard to beat for sheer beauty, gold culms with random green stripes and a red flush in direct sun. 'Alphonse Karr' is easy to keep at less than 5 feet tall in a pot. So for an outdoor for summer, indoors for winter bamboo, the Bambusa multiplex varieties are great.

Yeah, Brian @Soldano666 is a bonsai pottery artist, tattoo artist, and a regular visitor to the Milwaukee area, and an Arbor Arts member. I was hanging out with Kevin Stoevekin and the AAC June 27. Brian, hope you can make the June 2021 dates.
I have photos from our get together, but the signal here on the farm isn't allowing me to post photos.

@HorseloverFat you should keep an eye on the Milwaukee Bonsai Society website, and come down for events and classes. I call Milwaukee my "home" bonsai society. We could meet at one event or another.

That sound exciting... i was just about to pay dues to Brown Co... d’ya think (assuming I’d have to “scrape” pretty hard for dues) that I should “pick” Milwaukee if I can only afford one?

I have SEEM fern-leafed bamboo (Wasn’t sure what it was called until now)...

Probably my favorite.. aesthetically.

If you are talking about your seedlings, they are simply too young to tell. I think you have one of the Phyllostachys, because their seed stores well, germinates easily, gets sold all over eBay, never under it's correct botanical name.

There is a Pleioblastus distichous, that is called "'Fernleaf pygmy bamboo", but it is never available from seed.

Just keep your seedlings growing. In about 5 years we will be able to guess at species.

You can really read everything, including current newsletters of Milwaukee Bonsai Society on line. You can attend meetings with out joining, only if you take one of the workshops or classes do you have to join. MBS is in good financial shape, join your local club, but feel free to attend events offered by Milwaukee. If one of the paid courses comes up, you can join MBS at that time.

Oh no! Not my seedlings!

Other bamboo “colonies”

Already locked in big daddy. Made em keep my booth payment and roll in into 2021. And I'd love to see the pics when you get back to service

Yep, I have "some experience" with bamboo.

@Wires_Guy_wires and @penumbra
Herbicides, applied to cut ends of culms does indeed work. Often 2 or 3 years of re-cutting and re-application are required if you don't get the herbicide painted on immediately after cutting the culm.

A well groomed bamboo grove is a thing of exquisite beauty. But a grove that is neglected, can suddenly become out of control. It doesn't get out of control instantly. Usually you plant it, forget it, and then 10 years later, it suddenly dawns on you that you should have been taking out the "out of bounds" culm some 5 years ago.

an example of out of control bamboo

If you're a criminal on the run, you're not in control unless your bamboo... is out of control!

Glad you are bringing pots to sell. I'm glad Ron F got you on the list of vendors. Looking to hang out with you that weekend.

@HorseloverFat - start saving a few bucks, you need at least one Brian Soldano pot for your bonsai. At least one.
