Hi all,

Simple question. Does Parrotia Persica (Persian Ironwood) qualify for bonsai?
I inderstood it has amazing fall colours. Is it worthwhile to make it into bonsai from seedlings?

Definitely suitable for bonsai. I have several developing. Not only fall colours. The spring leaves are also extremely attractive - green with a dark margin.
Downside is that they do not ramify easily and internodes tend to be longish but responds well to root pruning and also to hard pruning when necessary.

I also have several in the growing out stage that are doing well and developing character. They have a beech-like look to them but are hardier.

Parotia as bonsai. Apologies for the crowded background.

New spring foliage. Love the brilliant green and contrasting red margins. Unfortunately that colour combination does not last long. Leaves turn to dull green for summer.
