Pacific Bonsai Expo, October 26-27, 2024, Oakland, CA

Anybody local know what the parking situation at Oakland Museum is like? Thinking about getting up there before 10a and doing the $20 flat rate. I just wasn't sure how big the parking lot is to gauge how early I should plan to get up there.
The bonsai garden at lake merritt is either $5 or $10 parking fee and there will be a shuttle available to get to the venue. Is directly across the lake from one to the other so very close and would be a scenic walk if you are up for it. Obviously not an option for the return since you will undoubtedly have arms full of trees like me :)

I thought I'd escape the PBE without spending $$$ on @NaoTK pots like I did at the national show last year, on account of flying to this show from Rhode Island. But I now have a sprinter van returning from the show so my bank account is screwed again....

A barfing of setup day images. @Ruddigger brought the original godzilla pot with I believe a satuski! Please admire it on top of our tallest display. We unpacked in record time thanks to many amazing bsop volunteers, Ruddigger and Liz, Vu, Left Coast Bonsai and crew, and @NaoTK finished in record time (before lunch) and finally took the baby so I could unpack.

See you all tomorrow! We are straight ahead from the entrance. The back corner is a bit dark but cant miss us. We are literally the wall of pots.

Go Tokutake team! So many people helped with the setup including the event volunteers.

This was such a great show. Truly high quality top notch trees from to back. Myself and @Colorado must have walked the exhibit 2 dozen times finding more details with every pass. It was a fun exercise in measuring trees up, not with my own, but with each other as a means to rank them. Not an easy task that’s for sure. It was nice having a highly curated smaller show rather than too many trees.

I really liked the venue personally, though I’ve heard the bridge yard 2 years ago was far more dramatic. The light still worked well and the venue was awfully large but handled well. Didn’t see it till we broke down but it was the old basketball court for the Cal Golden Bears basketball team with pac10 logos still intact. I got a laugh out of that.

The trees were truly the stars though the vendor selection was so so good. As @BrianBay9 said, there was a pot for every flavor. I made my way home with a @NaoTK pot an @Sansokuu arts pot and a Richard Kearney pot. TJ also gifted me a beautiful little glazed drum. So much available. Almost overwhelming.

I def had favorite trees but the hemlocks were my favorite. These are not trees I get to see often so it was a treat. The xl conifer winning dougie was so so good and one of my favorites. The black matte steel stand disappeared in a special kind of way.

While I do agree for the most part the winner of best in show, I can’t help but think that @yenling83 Redwood was high up on the post and def a contender for best in show. Just wonderfully handled from the accent to the ramification and full display. Cheers to you on that Jeremiah.

@Eric Schrader produced a very interesting center piece and it was cool to hear the back story on Bjorns video. Great show all together.

Met several BNUTTERS as well. @Wood was great to chill with. Met @misfit11 and @ZombieNick and I drank several tiki drinks and beers with @Ruddigger . That was a blast and believe me when I say he’s every bit of a grouch in person as he is online. 😂😂😂

I also got to spend significant time with Austin Heitzman which was badass. TJ and I Rolled with him to a small gathering at Sam Tans house in San Francisco and looked at his new garden and enjoyed some great conversation with good bonsai folks over many many drinks.

walked for miles and miles with @Colorado , met great new people, gave out a bunch of bonsai corazon stickers and ended my trip volunteering to breakdown the tables back drops and anything else needed. My legs are tired but my tree nerd bonsai heart is full. And thank goodness I decided to keep my collection and not throw everything out upon return. Hell, maybe I’ll have my own tree in the show someday.

Did Matt Reel have a tree in the show ? Anyone talk to him? Or even Bobby C? Was Mirai there as well ?
Cant say he did. I’ll have to look back through the show program. I did not talk with Matt, he seemed awfully busy with his vendor table. Not sure who Bobby C is? And that’s a negative on a Mirai appearance.

Huge props to Eric and team for another successful event! I won't echo the praise from everyone about the trees etc.

IKKO-san was telling me that this was his first time in the USA and his first international trip in 38 years. I felt bad he was in Oakland and the car in front of his apartment was broken into. Make Andrew organize it up in Portland! The club and I would help. Lots of bonsai people want an excuse to see America's bonsai capital. Many reasons Oregon is an easier lift.

The tree vendors thought there were too many vendors, so the money was spread thin. I actually prefer the original venue. The lighting was much better and it felt more curated and intimate. With optimization the old venue could support Saturday rush and the few people we had this year on Sunday.

That’s a dam shame about IKKO-san. Unfortunate for sure. Portland makes sense to me and I’d certainly be happy to make the trip.
