some trees that were in Omiya bonsai village this summer when I visited. Really interesting to see the plate style roots from the Japanese maples there.

Nice photos. I am visiting in January and hope to spend some time at Omiya
You can see the square cut maple nebari. They often have to cut it back in order get good drainage and for them to fit into the pot. Too much of a good thing!

Wow.

One day. I know some folks don't dig the big pancake nebari but I still love it, I wonder how old they are. I sort of assume that to achieve that, it may require the Ebihara technique, which would put a general limit on how old something like that could be, but maybe I'm wrong. Always wondered what the reality of the dream of creating one in this lifetime would be.

The square cut not so much, but the JM kabudachi is something else.

Wow did not know that. You should definitely try it out . I’d recommend a whole day there, as the omiya bonsai village is truly a village full of bonsai. Many nurseries around every corner. Nowadays however they do not allow pictures in their gardens, unless you’re at the dedicated Omiya bonsai museum.

I love the big pancake nebari as grotesque as it can get I still find it very attractive. Id love to start one but I do live in Southern California so it might be hard as jms don’t do so well here unfortunately
