I was looking through Bald Cypress "stuff" online to pass a bit of time and ran across this article. I had forgotten about this tree. I saw it a very long time ago when I was a kid. It is in the Shangri La Botanical Garden in Orange, Texas. It is a 1,200 year old Pond cypress. Interesting "design" on it. Very different from what a 1,200 year old Bald Cypress might look like. Primarily, it's pretty short and wide, with drooping lower branching...

That's cool! Every time I hear something cool in Texas I tell myself, great let me go see it. Only to realize it is not going to be a nice one day round trip... 5 hrs with no traffic one way trip is not my idea of a nice quick trip.

Orange is mostly western Louisiana 😁 It's on the border just across the Sabine river from La. It's not close to anything, except Beaumont and Lake Charles.

Tee hee....
It is close to me but I don't feel the need. One would have to pay for a swamp tour in Shangri La to see it. May be some day when I have a lot of visiting friends and we go there for a swamp tour. Up until now, most of my friends want to go East and see the swamp near New Orleans instead.

If you ever do, give me a holler, that path goes right by my office.

I feel this.
I was actually out passing through Boerne a few months back visiting Hill Country State Natural Area. Gorgeous part of Texas (I’m pretty jealous you live out there lol). It may be the prettiest area of Texas I’ve seen actually. We took Interstate 10 and then hopped onto Hwy 16.

The area here is nice, I like the area north west of Abilene and San Angelo, it is slightly cooler as well. I do like that we get to see green and a few hills vs other areas in TX.

Y'all take a trip into east Texas--behind the pine curtain into Jefferson, Longview, Tyler, Nacodoches, Lake Palestine, Caddo Lake, on down to the Gulf through Orange and Beaumont--stop for some fried alligator...

I had fried alligator tail when I was at Redstone Arsenal Alabama for an Army training, I know this may sound like cliché but I swear its true... taste like chicken.

It does and it’s one of my favorite cajun snacks!
