Old import JBP rehab project

This was a major grafting season for this tree. In February I cut a dozen scions from the tree and grafted them to the interior branches. Here's a series of pictures illustrating how I prepare the detached scions for grafting.



Once the scions are bagged, I cut the scion end into a wedge as normal, slice into the branch of the understock, insert the scion into the cut, and secure the scion into place with grafting tape.

Of the dozen or so detached scion grafts I performed, eleven were successful.

I also repotted the tree in February and undertook root grafts again on the bald spot of the trunk. I did three approach grafts and two thread grafts. For the thread grafts, I drilled a hole all the way through the trunk and wrapped the seedlings' needles with grafting tape.

All five root grafts have survived, but those that I approach grafted are much more vigorous than those I thread grafted. Im guessing that thread grafting damaged the needles and buds - it will probably take a few seasons for them to regain vigor.

Excellent info, good work. Some time ago was given censure on here for "suggesting" thread graft of pine. Very obvious these same ones did not treat you same way. What works works no matter who. One suggestion might help: after drlling hole push long piece of thin wall shrink tubing with slit lengthwise thru hole. Put seedling inside tubing and pull thru hole together. Except for compressing seedling no damage is done to sprout.

I've never seen them either - we'll see how they do together. The roots are a challenge on this tree with large encircling roots in several places (as can be seen in the photographs). These will have to be reduced over time and new roots grafted on. If you had to ask me today, I'd recommend approach grafts due to the marked difference in vigor between the seedlings. But we'll see if the thread grafted seedlings make a comeback and if there is any difference in success rate.

That's a good idea - I'll think about it. When I thread grafted these, I wrapped the needles and bud tightly with parafilm to protect the seedling. I also had to drill a pretty large hole to insert them without damaging the bud or needles. Hopefully we'll see more vigor from them in the next season or two. Buds look pretty healthy right now, so I might see more growth next year.

Quick confirmation … seems scion grafting is not considered ‘major operation’ and tree can be repotted the same year. Just wanted to confirm that I got your timeline right.

In general, I find that my grafting success rate is better if I don’t repot the same year that I graft, However, root grafting is mostly easily done during repot. I can see precisely where the root grafts need to be placed and I have room to get in there and place them. So, as with everything, it all depends on the health of the tree. Having had it in my care for a couple of years,I thought this tree was strong and healthy enough that this procedure might be a success (all five root grafts are still alive, but the approach grafts are MUCH stronger than the thread grafts).
