Yeah, that's rough. FWIW, Jack Frost is a sneaky bastard and it can form when temps are nowhere near freezing. When it's low 40's to high 30's, clear and no wind=frost.
Indeed!! You need to check your current dewpoint, and estimate it at 12-2a.m...
I've realized frost at 39 degrees before, and don't doubt situations would allow this to happen in the low 40's, too!
