I have three mature Shimpaku and one pre bonsai Shimpaku. Currently, (I'm in Maine, zone 5b) the three adults have all gotten their bronze winter color but the juvenile is bright green as though it was May. First, why is there a difference in color between the adults and the juvenile? And second, we are having a warm stretch currently (temps in the 70° range)...since the adults seem to be in winter mode, will the warm temps harm them? Should I move them into the garage where they winter well each year? (I usually don't put them in until a month from now...)

Please post a picture of the trees so we can see the color.

I would not move them until it's necessary honestly, especially since we are ad can get warm spells in the fall

Here you go...

Older trees are more set in their growth cycle, younger trees not so much! I would not concern myself with individual variation in response to seasonal change.
This is common in most species. It is a reflection of the growth stage or vigour of the individual trees.

Sorry. I guess I should have been more clear.
Not trying to be annoying...
Please take close up of each tree.
The shot from a distance, while nice, does not help see what is happening.

I'm quite a bit south of you so it's been colder up there but I can't recall seeing them change color this soon so want to make sure something else isn't going on.

Did you check for mites just in case?
A bit late for a mite attack I think but id check to be sure.
Also when did these change color?

I have shimpaku with bronze color already in my climate, and some without. It can be something so simple as location in the nursery. Amount of wind protection etc.

I treat regularly for mites and Juniper fungus so I doubt that's the cause. We have had many nights around freezing and below, then it warms up nicely during the day. This is the earliest I can remember them bronzing too...could it predict something about the weather?

Shorter days, cooler weather could be a prediction of winter;) Actually we are experiencing warmer temperatures longer into the fall season here and some trees are responding as if it was a normal fall pattern. When the leaves turn colour on my tridents I remove the leaves. A group of similar age, similar stage of development, on the same bench in the nursery is a funny sight. Several have green leaves , several are bare with the coloured leaves already removed. Side by side in the same location. Same care and level of fertilization. You would think they were individuals.

Yea as I said, he is up in Maine and it's been pretty cold there so it definitely possible. Mine are all still bright green. Noticed my more mature one is showing signs of changing when I walked through the garden yesterday though now that I think about it.

Just thought it would be a good idea to check to be sure. They are nice trees. Would be a shame if they had something wrong
