Now this is just ridiculous

Photographing trees in a way that exhibits and conveys the trees' appearance in person while on camera seems to be almost as much of an art as growing/styling/careing for the tree.
I agree a lot with this statement. having been photographing my trees for well over thirty years, it is very hard to convey in a photo what the tree really looks like. For instance, having seen some of the premiere bonsai exhibits on the West coast as well as three premiere collections and a mess of nurseries and demos, I can easily say that if a picture even remotely looks good in a photo, it probably looks awesome in person. If it looks killer in a photo, it probably looks very masterpiece in person.

Lights and flash full on...

Flash off, two fill lights, one overhead and one shining right from the left to invoke shadows.

Funny you should state this. I have a boxwood that I just can't seem to capture its awesomeness () in a photo. In person the tree looks extremely cool yet no matter how I change the light, adjust branches or camera angle the photo makes it look like a full blown turd. I'm just going to forget about it and enjoy it for what it is. No sharing this one.

Yes Si loves these trees. That is why I know how to buy trees Si will love. Exposed roots and literati - they are his weakness :)
hahahaha, I can see what you said!
Bonhe

I only wish your root were longer so that it could keep on going, but I guess you could always extend it with branches.
