Nova bonsai garden

Beautiful clear night for some backyard astronomy - my other hobby. It felt good to get back to doing this after some time. Here is my first attempt to photography the Andromeda Galaxy. Image was created from 100 three minute exposures. I don’t know that I’ll ever get great at this, but I have a fun time doing it. I have a beginner setup - I use a 72mm aperture, 420mm focal length scope (f/5.8 ) and a Canon EOS Ra mirrorless DSLR camera on a Skywatcher HEQ5 mount.2023-09-17T15.55.25.jpegIMG_1047.jpeg

This is so funny……..I have plans for this autmn and winter.

Mine is basic, but really nice and clear non-the-less……globulars and everything….nebulae

I’ll show pics later ..no internet now

I read an entire instruction course on star hopping!

When the milky way is viewed as you picture that is into the center or galaxy core……….

Very cool Scott. I actually just got back from Marfa TX with my wife. We attended a star party at the McDonald observatory and saw some great stuff. Star clusters, nebula, Saturn. It had rained earlier but the clouds parted like the Red Sea just as we got up there. Learned a great deal and just had a great time. Nothing like universal viewing to really make your existence feel equal parts meaningless and completely extraordinary all at the same time.😂

It’s a great hobby. Like bonsai, there is always something more to be learned. Also, watering is much easier.

It was such a clear night. I was able to get this shot of the Milky Way with my phone!View attachment 509232

So sad. The Spotted Lanternfly has arrived in numbers to Fauquier county. 😕

I saw them first at Sky Meadow state park.

A few weeks later I started seeing them on my property.

Both trees pictured are Ailanthus altissima (Tree of Heaven). Introduced as an ornamental in the late 1700s, it turned out to be highly invasive and difficult to eradicate due to its tendency to sucker when cut. It is now widespread across the east. We took down about 50 or so with a big excavator when we were first clearing, but there are many left. It’s dioecious, so we’ll make another pass focusing on the females.

Plant natives!!

Here’s a fun thing. On a hike nearby I really like, there is a fairly large grove of American chestnut trees - probably at least 10 acres or perhaps more and pretty thick. None of them are very large- they grow to a point, succumb to the blight, and then resprout from suckers from the stump. Some seem to live long enough to produce burs. I opened a couple and collected some chestnuts to plant out on the farm. IMG_1150.jpegIMG_1182.jpeg

Processed a bunch of lumber working at the mill with the sawyer today. Very hard work with a very skilled gentleman and descendent of Shenandoah Valley pioneers. That was a privilege…. I have the bruises to prove it, lol.IMG_0008.jpegIMG_0009.jpegIMG_0013.jpegIMG_0014.jpegIMG_0729.jpegIMG_0018.jpeg
