Let's try again! Not had much luck with them, but along with Taxus they're my favourite conifers.
Norway Spruce is known as one of the best varieties across Europe.
This is a garden centre buy, this one had the thickest trunk out of a bunch tagged at the same price.
And judging by the foliage and buds looks very healthy...
The tag says pot grown, but I imagine it was grown in the field, before being dug and put in the pot, you can see roots coming out of the air holes so I'd say it spent a few months in the pot at most.
Reason I know it's not largely established in the pot is because the soil came loose quite easily without being too aggressive with my root hook.

Most of the main roots feeding the tree are usually occupying the lower part of the root ball, as we can see here, I know it's safe to remove a couple near the surface which are too high on the trunk.
I've had success with conifers when leaving all roots intact, and choosing a deeper container to pot in..
No roots have been cut here apart from some higher ones...

I decided rather than go with the formal upright, I'm going to use what's on offer in the base and try to build something more unique. So a couple higher roots have been kept and I've potted the tree at a slant to give more feeling of a tree with a powerful, rugged base and the cut root there will be jinned and help to create a more interesting composition..
The tree will be reduced to that main leader in the middle to create some dynamic movement20231121_200720.jpg20231121_200701.jpg
