Ninebark...anyone have it as bonsai material

I found one on the English forum too.

There may be more there.

Are you considering purchasing that one?

I may add it to my list of wants...but if there are issues with back budding and such...I would like to know.

English forum...hm-mmm off to do more research. Thanks!

I have some large ones in my landscape. They are plenty hardy here, but don't know of any in bonsai. I have a diablo (maroon leaves) that is slowly reverting back to green leaves.

I seen a few in google search. But not many...which makes me wonder why...sorry to hear yours is reverting back to green leaves. Is it from suckering? What's the trunk look like...never tempted to pot it up I take it...

Physocarpus that I see in landscape are very hardy. They are nice looking and all but I have only seen them growing like Honeysuckle with a rather large "cluster" of branches at the base. I suspect that is the primary reason it may not be popular. They do however propagate from hardwood cuttings so there is potential if you can get a fat one to take. There seems to be one out there with rather small leaves as well the Physocarpus opulifolius 'Little Devil'. As with "most" any shrub they would probably require a lot of trimming and such. I actually put them on my list though. It "seems" they have cascade potential but I won't know how well they take to wire until I have one. Interesting indeed...

I was at a Walmart in Suburban Philly a few weeks ago and saw some maroon leaved nine-bark in 2-3 gallon pots for $4.98.

They looked pretty leggy so I didn't pay much attention to them. Shame on me,I know, but I was scurrying home with my $14 Tiger Ficus "bonsai".

1st post here in 10 years!
I was just looking up information about Ninebark and came across this post.

I have two that I’ve kept for around four years. The 1st was a landscape tree I pulled from my mother‘s yard. I believe it to be the Diablo variety but could be wrong.IMG_1725.jpegIMG_1726.jpegIMG_1728.jpegIMG_1729.jpeg

The second one was a nursery clearance plant without a label, but seems to be the common Ninebark.

Maybe 40% of the tree exists today.

What I’ve learned about these plants; just my experience. 😊
CONS:

They are pretty unpredictable and course growing. Cutbacks can lead to major branch die off. They discard damaged regions quickly.
This makes traditional bonsai training tricky. Branches are fairly weak and brittle, so accidental breaks are common. Wiring should be done carefully. To supplement a clip and grow technique.

PROS:
These plants offer beautiful color foliage, and of course, have amazing bark that peels regularly - especially over the live veins, making Shaari a natural occurrence. I have not done anything to treat the trunks aside from peeling bark.

They are very hardy as mentioned, I leave them in these big pots here in Minnesota, outside with no protection.

Flowers are pretty nice and for the first time this year, I witnessed the white flowers turning to a mauve color as they expired.

I noticed the amazing pealing bark of the ninebark. I tried to look it up in the search engine. And not many came up. So...those who have it. Mind sharing it's pros and cons of having it as bonsai.
I just saw one at the nursery today, a Diablo. It's a beautiful tree, expensive. Did you ever get one?

in my early days growing bonsai I used to have one. The coarse growth and large leaves eventually made me sell it. I am now kicking myself as I feel I would have been able to tame it somewhat better nowadays.

That's pretty much the mistake I'm trying to avoid. I'd love to get the species of my choice... but I'm not ready.

I have a pair of ninebark I purchased last fall, a cultivar named “tiny wine gold” which has miniature foliage and pushes bright yellow leaves in the spring that eventually turn lime green. I haven’t done any work on them yet — interested to see how they backbud when chopped. The trunk lines were nice … the small leaves were a plus … they were on sale … and I have a problem 🤷‍♀️

Not offering much to the conversation but they sure are pretty! Will make some shohin clumps out of them.

"...and I have a problem" 😄 Great conversation...

I'd be interested in following the progress if you were to start a thread about them.
