newbie very unsure about if my bonsai needs watering?

it may be a silly question but whats the best way to check how damp the soil is at the minute im just pressing my finger on top of the soil but i keep thinking it may still be very dam underneath the top of the soil and i may be over watering them

Stick a skewer or chopstick all the way in the soil and leave it there, lift it to check humidity and put it back.
