Back from a quick trip to India .
Only bought a couple types of 6 seed packets ( Papdi and tuvar ( toor )
Common type of indian vegetable already grow here in New Zealand
can't find it on the database and the customs officer said we could not have the seeds ( which were sealed in Vikram packaging )

does anyone know how to use this database ?

use the botanical name only which the custom officer should know ( don't you think ? )
Lablab purpureus

Sometimes the concern with bringing seeds or plants across borders isn't that they're an invasive species, but that they might be infected by a potentially invasive disease or pest. There's also the economics. Some big company could lobby for restrictions so that people can't import or export and have to go through them in stead.
But usually it's an idiot customs agent who just says no to everything to make their job easier.

I'll try playing around with it. I'm a bit intrigued.

Totally agree as there was another passenger behind me who bought in a dried flower and the custom officer had the same treatment ( item was destroyed )

I put the genus name - Lablab - and then species name - purpureus - in separately in their respective text boxes. Got a link to this.
I guess the paperwork and standards for importing seeds. Generally, though, this level of stuff is for quantities of scale, which takes us back to option C in my previous statement.

Frankly, for what you were looking to do, you should have just stashed them in your toiletries bag, or your stowed luggage.

Try putting Indian elm tree - botanical name Holoptelea integrifolia
is the database up to-date ??

Yeah, totally not worth it if you get caught, but then they're really geared toward looking for more than just a fistful of seeds.

I'll give it a go.

Not familiar with that species. Does that mean it's not up to date on the designations?

Huh. Still just links to the paperwork. Doesn't actually say anything about it.
I tried searching that MPI website to see what L2 means, but it froze on me. How very bureaucratic of them. Could be because I'm a phone maybe.

Anyway, it's 1030pm 2 days before autumn in my little corner of hell, and the kids have school tomorrow.
Good night. Maybe more fun tomorrow.

BTW, just looked up the lablab purpureus. I want to find some, see how they grow here.

My daughter loves them hence the reason I was trying to get some to grow in the garden

Also known as Hyacinth bean seeds Indian papdi or Egyptian kidney beans a special winter seasonal green vegetable from India asia harvested during winter season. used in making special dishes
the other seed was Toor Dal is native to India

Just looked that one up, and I've heard of the pigeon peas before. I imagine they'd work in dishes much like lentils. Need to give it a try sometime.

Just bought some Hyacinth bean seeds for the NZ trademe site . So the seeds are already available in New Zealand ( which means the database does not work properly )

It could be that they're on the list because they don't want uncontrolled importing. Having them is fine, but don't bring them in without the paperwork.

I’m still confused the seeds I bought in were in a sealed packet commercially grow product by Vikram there was no travelling bugs etc or dirt
not sure any paperwork is needed
the main issue is the database doesn’t really work for someone travelling to New Zealand
