New cultivar?

I tried finding the databases on the RHS website for registering cultivars of trees and shrubs. The website is "pretty" with thousands of nice photos, but so junked up with "pretty pictures" and "happy feel good photos" that it is impossible to navigate. No clear links to menus of the many services I know the RHS does. So I gave up.
It’s quite frustrating really. I applaud them for trying to create an accessible website to attract people to horticulture, but you’re right, the website lack any real depth. Maybe it’s not what they are setting out to do, but even the guides and tutorials are very basic. Certainly finding much on this sort of area is difficult to find.

you'll have to hang on to it for quite a while to make sure the leaves don't slowly mature toward the typical shape
Yes that is a concern. I wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest if it did revert back at some point. Nature has to evolve, but these anomalies do often end up just being a phase so we’ll see. It’s sufficiently different at the moment and on every part of the plant that it was noticeable. What will be will be I guess.

Nice one Jerry. I didn't realise there were that many, to be honest, but most seem to relate to growth habit rather than leaf shape. ‘Queen Elizabeth’ does look fairly similar, but still not so dainty. I’ll get some more photos tomorrow for a better comparison.

Well - I went out and took some photos of a field maple I have growing in a garden bed. I'm wondering if this is simply very juvenile foliage?

Yes they are quite lacy or sparse looking, but I went out earlier and got a couple of photos of the tree and I‘ve got to say, I think these leaves are quite unique. Not quite the usual juvenile leaves, but time will tell how they change throughout the year.

That is very very cool!

Acer campestre 'woocashii' 👍

I'd pay $20-25 a pop for a 1 gallon all day for those!

I'm serious though, we're going to have to figure out a way for those to make it over here once you get the propagation going.

Very, very nice.

I wish you success, reproducing it. That's a great find. 👍 👍👍
Thank you, Alain. I appreciate that - just to know I’m not going mad with wishful thinking, if nothing else. It is particularly pretty, so I hope it can be cultivated successfully. Not to sound all sappy, but it’s weird to think that one single plant on a bit of scrub land could potentially be so precious.

Getting suspiciously like 'Queen Elizabeth'?

I was thinking more Acer Campestre ‘bonsai made me do it ii’

Yes it would be nice to get it out there. Or anywhere, to be honest. I’m not even thinking from a financial perspective if it turns out well. Serendipity needs to be shared not hoarded so we’ll figure out a way to get it state side!

You opened your eyes and you found it. Now you must keep it for all of us ;)
Don’t worry I’ll make sure you’re on the list for first dibs. I’d rather someone who knew how to get the best out it was a custodian, instead of a fortunate finder.

No, no updates yet. I check it regularly, waiting for such a time as I can dig it up and its still going. It is in a fairly sheltered spot behind a fence and under some more mature trees so there’s limited growth for the year, but not a single leaf is of the usual type. I’m really looking forward to next spring already...

Exciting - looking forward to seeing updates - very curious about autumn colour. I'm guessing you at least took cuttings to satisfy at least some of your excitement?!

Yes I’m curious if it has any variation to the usual golden colour. I did take a couple of cuttings but there wasn't really enough extending growth to take too many and as of yet they either died or haven’t taken. I’ve never done any propagating really though so it’s probably my fault with regards to preparation or soil type or something.

You should try to take some more cuttings this summer, use well lignified growth from this year or two year old wood.

I had some field maple cuttings take this year that I did last summer. I put them in an old pot with a dead tree in it, put it in the shade and forgot about them until this spring when I noticed new growth.

It seems every time I take cuttings from my trees and try to do it right, they never take, but when I just throw them in an old pot and forget about them, they seem to always do well...

Good plan. Thanks to @Clorgan i’m going to check up on it today so I’ll see what I can grab off it.
